The R2 is the lighter radio of the two and the one Motorola publishes for longer runtime: 261 g on the 2100 mAh pack, and 22.5 hours digital against the 5/5/90 duty cycle. For a site that needs a plain voice radio with the best weight-to-battery ratio in the mid-tier, that is the whole argument. The limits are equally explicit in the specification: IP55 rather than IP67, 64 channels, no published display or Bluetooth, and encryption limited to Enhanced Privacy plus analogue scrambling.
MOTOTRBO R5
The R5 buys back everything the R2 gives up. IP67 sealing, a 1.5-inch display on the full-keypad model, Bluetooth 5.2, up to 256 channels, and a 3200 mAh pack that carries UL TIA4950 and CSA C22.2 intrinsic safety - which is the difference between a radio that is allowed into a hazardous area and one that is not.
