DP4400 vs DP4401 vs DP4401Ex: Which Variant

The three DP4000 variants share a datasheet family but not a use case. DP4401 adds the 800 MHz band that DP4400 lacks. DP4401Ex trades 5 W down to 1 W, adds 122 g of housing, narrows the UHF band to four sub-bands and moves the operating floor from -30 C to -20 C - because it is certified for explosive atmospheres, not because it is a better radio. Here is the decision order that stops buyers paying for ATEX on a site that never needed it.

DP4400

Buyers arrive at these three part numbers because a tender or a site drawing names the DP4000 series, and then the question is which suffix. The answer is not the one the price list implies. DP4400 and DP4401 are the same radio with a band difference: DP4401 adds 806-870 MHz, which matters only if the site already operates in that band or a regulator has assigned it. On every other line the two share 32 channels, 5 W VHF / 4 W UHF, the same battery catalogue and the same -30 C to +60 C envelope. If your licence is UHF 400-470 MHz, DP4401's extra band is inventory you carry and never transmit on.

DP4401

DP4401Ex is a different argument. Certification constrains the hardware, so the numbers move in the direction buyers do not expect: power drops from 5 W to 1 W, weight rises from 333 g to 455.5 g, the UHF range narrows to four sub-bands, and the operating floor moves up to -20 C. None of that is a downgrade - it is what an ATEX/IECEx housing costs. The practical consequence is coverage: a 1 W handheld needs the repeater and antenna plan to do work that a 5 W handheld would have done on its own, so budget the RF design before you budget the handsets. Note also that the manufacturer publishes IP64 under the ATEX certificate against IP67 outside it, and publishes no encryption figure for this model. Both are normal for certified equipment and both should appear in your technical submittal rather than being quietly upgraded by a reseller.
